What is the Yowie?

2021 Yowie Sighting

On December 4, 2021, three men working on a plantation would have an encounter with a terrifying beast. Stirling Slolock-Bennett, Seamus Fitzgerald, and one other man were driving home on a dark street in the remote roads of Queensland, Australia when they would see something truly astonishing. As the men were looking down the dark, desolate road they were able to make out a slouched over figure under a streetlight. The men couldn’t make out exactly what it was at first though. As they got closer, the creature turned toward them. It had an apelike face and long arms. The car appeared to startle the creature and it scattered in an ape-like way into the brush.

After the event unfolded, the men were terrified and in shock for some time. Seamus Fitzgerald had problems sleeping and stated it was first type of experience with anything paranormal.

While the story gained worldwide attention appearing in newspapers, locals had seen this beast for centuries. In Australia this large ape-like humanoid has become to be known the Yowie.

Description of the Yowie

Yowie are typically described as a large humanoid apelike creature. With many reports coming in over the decades, the beast is typically described one of two ways. The First is a shorter version, around 4 to 5 feet tall: the other is a much larger type, around 10 feet tall. Many speculate that the smaller type could be children and when full grown, they reach 8-10 feet tall. It is said the Yowie have orange-brownish hair that grows 2-4 inches long. Many state the Yowie is shy but can turn aggressive if provoked. Interestingly, the creature is said to appear more often in storms than dry weather. Perhaps the most notable feature on the Yowie is the large fang like canines protruding from its mouth.

While the 2021 Queensland sighting is surely a fascinating one, reports have poured in over the country for years of encounters with the beast.

Dean Harrison Research on Yowie

Dean Harrison, from Australian Yowie Research, has documented thousands of reports of alleged sightings over the decades. Harrison claims he has seen one himself. He called his experience “life changing” and also noted how the beast let out a ferocious roar.

One interesting story Comes from a video Dean received a few years earlier. Taken in North Queensland, the footage shows a group of workers discovering the Corpe of a wild boar ripped cleanly in two. There are large “footprints” leading away from the scene. The reaction in the video doesn’t seem staged and Harrison states that he has gotten other reports of animals ripped in half.

One researcher has claimed to have multiple sightings and even found where the Yowie sleep.

Wayne Lewin Yowie Hunter

Wayne Lewin, a retiree and Yowie hunter has been searching for the Yowie for years. He’s looked in the multiple remote areas of the country and has been trying to collect the smoking gun evidence to prove its existence.

Lewin claims that one day while searching back in the woods he witnessed it himself. Lewin stated:

“I’m guessing it was like three meters tall, possibly bigger, standing in the shadows of the tree line. No mistaking it was there. I could see its arms, its legs, its dome-shaped head. He was massive.”

Lewin goes on to say that he had his camera on him but was so shocked and in disbelief, he didn’t think to take a photo.

Lewin also says he found deep in the woods what he believes are the Yowie Nests. He notes how the trees are bent down in ways that are unnatural. Still, many question Lewin’s belief these are nests and state he is looking for something not there.

Lewin has taken multiple photos and alleges the creature present is the Yowie in his pictures. His pictures though are often blurry, and the smoking gun evidence remains elusive.

Despite this other modern-day sighting have occurred.

Steve Piper Yowie Sighting

Steve Piper, an Australian Bushwalker, was out hiking one day in 2000 when he alleged to see a Yowie walking in the woods. He had his camcorder on hand and recorded the incident. In the video, you can clearly see something dark and hairy walking through the woods. The video would explode in popularity and even drew comparisons to the legendary Patterson-Gimlin Bigfoot footage. However, many questioned the footage and noted it wasn’t crystal clear. In addition, a video like this would be pretty easy to fake in modern day.

Rex Gilroy

Still, the number of reports coming in though is truly impressive. The Late Rex Gilroy, a cryptozoologist, documented over 3,000 reports of the Yowie while he was alive. He believed the creature was related to the North American Sasquatch.

Tim “The Yowie Man”

Perhaps the most famous Australian to study the Yowie is a researcher nicknamed “Tim the Yowie Man”.  In 1994, Tim claims he saw a Yowie while bushwalking in Brindabella National Park. He’s wrote on the Yowie, cryptids and other paranormal extensively.

Without question, there’s been a significant number of sightings from a variety of witnesses over a good period of time.

Australian Yowie Research Website,

In addition, there has been massive footprints as well as vocalizations documented. On the Australian Yowie Research Website, the site shows dozens of footprints and castings. Many of the pictures show large ape like footprints in bipedal tracks.

These are alleged to be photographed or cast in areas the Yowie had been spotted.

While many modern-day sightings have occurred, it’s important to point out that the beast has been seen for hundreds of years in Australia.

Older Sightings Yowie

Australia’s Aboriginal people were the first to document the creature. The Kuku Yalanji tribe located in far north Queensland claim that they co-existed with the Yowie for years. The first report from a westerner is said to be in the 1790’s.

Reports continued in the 19th and early twentieth century.

In the 1880s,  naturalist Henry James McCooey witnessed the creature in New South Wales. according to him, it was five feet tall,  was “tailless and covered with very long black hair.”

One other interesting Yowie fact concerns where the sightings occur. According to Yowiesightings.com, a website that tracks witness reports, the majority of the sightings occur in Queensland and New South Wales. Approximately 90% of sightings occur in these states, adding all sorts of interesting questions.

For one, most sightings seem to occur not in the heart of the outback but either on the outskirts or just inside it. Why might this be? Could this just be the result of fewer people being in the remote parts of the outback?

The Outback

The outback is a massive remote area in Northern and Western Australia. The area is sparsely populated and houses some of the most dangerous animals in the world, including the saltwater crocodile.

What is the burrunjor?

Is it possible that if the Yowie exists, it stays away from the primary hotspots that crocodiles reside? This interesting question might come down to one thing: size. For example, we could expect a 5-foot Yowie to be targeted by adult crocodiles. However, a ten-foot Yowie might be a different story.

What is the Australian Bunyip?

A full-grown croc might weigh the same or close as an Adult Yowie and avoid attacking them.

Theories on the Yowie

This raises the question is the Yowie just folklore or if it is real what is it? There are several theories on what it could be.

The first theory is that the Yowie is some sort of new primate species, one that evolved and grew much bigger. It evolved to be more man like than gorilla or ape like. This theory assumes the creatures have always been here and that they are very reclusive.

What is the Alabama White Thang?

Some believe that the Yowie are primates were either brought over years ago or perhaps a pet that escaped. Gorillas are not native to Australia, but it’s reasonable to assume that one might have been let lose in the wild.

One theory is that the Yowie sightings are some sort of wild man or mountain man.

This belief holds that someone or a small group of people moved into the mountains.

Some think that the sightings of the Yowie were simply mistaken sightings of something else.

Skeptics point out if the Yowie does exist in a small population, we should have found a body by now. In particular they note that in all the fires that have occurred, no bones were ever found. But believers point out that the Yowie are reported to be very fast.

What is the Fouke Monster?

Some even have more unbelievable theories.

Some Yowie searchers believe that the Yowie are interdimensional. This is one reason a body has never been found. In North America, some Sasquatch researchers believe Bigfoot is interdimensional. This is due to some sightings Sasquatch seemingly simply disappears in plain sight.

While the hard evidence or smoking gun evidence for the Yowie is still needed, it’s important to remember there is a large amount of eyewitness reports and believers in this cryptid.

Similar to the United States and Bigfoot, Australia has a good number of people actively searching for the Yowie. Perhaps soon we will get the crystal-clear photo needed.
