On March 28, 1959, three friends would encounter one of the strangest and creepiest cryptids in modern history. Denny Patterson, Wayne Armstrong, and Michael Lane then teenagers living in Ohio were wandering around the swampy shores of the Charles Mill Reservoir when they saw what can only be described as a monster. In this post, we will examine the beast that became to be known as “The Charles Mill Lake Monster”.
As the teenagers were walking along the banks on the night of March 28, when they would see something truly astonishing. A black head began rising out of the water. It was getting bigger and bigger and soon the strange amphibious creature was 7 feet tall. With piercing green eyes, the monster was armless and hairless, and had a dark color.
Terrified the boys fled and immediately went to inform the police of the story. The police hesitantly went to the reservoir to see what might have spooked the teenagers. To their surprise, they saw large, webbed footprints leading out of the water.
4 years would pass, and no more sightings would occur of the monster.
Then in 1963, the beast was seen again.
A witness reported seeing large green eyes and colossal beast.
That would be last sighting of this creature. However, another monster is said to roam this area as well. This cryptid has been seen over the years although there aren’t many documented accounts. This creature is described as humanoid, similar to bigfoot, but possessing glowing orange eyes. Some think that these two cryptids might be linked somehow.

Over the years there’s been several theories as to what this creature is or was.
With so few witnesses, many speculate that this simply could have been a prank. There tends to be quite a bit of evidence leading to this conclusion. The footprints could have been made by the teenagers possibly. Also, just 5 years earlier. the hit movie “The Creature from the Black Lagoon” was released and was wildly successful. Without the question, the boy’s description was very similar to the monster from the movie.
While it’s certainly possible this was simply a prank from the boys, it could also be the case of mistaken identity. Many have suggested that it could have been a diver coming from the water. This doesn’t really explain the green eyes and size though. It is possible though the boys didn’t get a good look and couldn’t see the arms
The footprints were seen after the event and were described as huge, so that leads to much doubt that a normal size man was under the water.
Other theories suggest that this creature was extraterrestrial or interdimensional in nature. While many speculate that alien life exists under the oceans, there’s also several cases of strange beings and ships being seen under the water. One famous case is the Lake Bakal Swimmers from Russia. Could the Charles Mill Lake Monster be an extraterrestrial that took up residence under the water? Or did this being possibly come from another dimension? Many speculate that bigfoot and other cryptids travel through some type of portal to our world.

Charles Mill Lake Reservoir has been described as the perfect spot for a swamp monster to live. It is very muddy with an abundance of fish like Bass and catfish. However, it is also a popular recreational spot and many campers and fishermen come here. It seems that if the creature was still lurking around, more witness reports would have come in. Perhaps though, back in the 1950’s something truly bizarre was living in those murky waters.
