Throughout history, many cultures have told stories of cursed people. Often these people did something terrible in life and somehow, someway were cursed to roam the earth forever.
In South American culture, one wandering soul is said to exist. One that wanders the grasslands of Northwestern South America. The being is said to emit a strange, eerie whistle and if you hear it, it’s probably too late, you’ll be dead soon. This entity has become to be known as El Silbon, or The Whistler.
The Legend of Silbon has several origin stories, but perhaps the most popular is the following. A spoiled young man demanded his father go hunt and kill a deer for him. The young man’s dad was an inexperienced hunter though and wasn’t skilled enough to kill a deer. After returning home empty handed, the boy killed his father and then cut out his organs. He gave them to his mother and had her cook them. The mother began eating and soon noticed the food was different and really tough to chew. soon, she discovered that she was eating the flesh of her dead husband. Once the mother found out, she was furious and cursed the child. As soon as the boy’s grandfather heard what happened, he ordered the boy be tied to a post and whipped.

After the disciplining was complete, the wounds were then cleaned with alcohol. Still, the young man’s punishment wasn’t over. The grandfather exiled the boy to the woods with his father’s bones. Shortly after, vicious rabid dogs were sent to hunt him by the grandfather. They would kill him in a horrific death.
Once the young man was killed, he transitioned into a malevolent spirit.
There are variations on how and why he died, but several things remain consistent, notably that he was cursed by some combination of his mother and grandfather and also that starving angry dogs were released to kill him.
Today, El Silbon is thought to be extremely tall and thin. It is thought he is between 20 and 40 feet tall. He is said to wear farmer’s clothing and carry a sack of bones, his father’s. It’s said that during dry season, El Silbon can be seen sitting up in the sparse trees of the grasslands. While many say he is pure evil, others say he only attacks wrongdoers. It is said he looks for drunks and womanizers on the streets at night. When he finds them, he bashes them with a stick.
According to legend, you’ll know El Silbon is around when you hear his whistle. If it’s far away, that means he close and you’re in danger. If it sounds close though, he is far away and you’re safe. Many believe the only thing that can save you from El Silbon are barking dogs or the sound of a whip snapping.
There haven’t been many physical descriptions of El Silbon. This is thought because anyone who encounters him is killed.

Over the years the origin of where el silbon has been debated. This story is thought to have originated in the 19th century from either the town of Guanarito or El Vijao , both of which are located in Portuguesa. Portuguesa is located in Los Llanos which is a region in Venezuela which is primarily composed of tropical grasslands.

While many quickly dismiss El Silbon as simple folklore, there are many in the Los Llanos region who believe in the legend. It is believed if you are out in the grasslands, and you hear a distant whistle, it might just be too late.
